Herbert May, an Inspector of Electrical Forgings from London, enlisted into the Royal Marines at Chatham on 10 July 1940. Joined 46RM Commando 'B' Troop on or after its formation in August 1943. Prisoner of war 11 June 1944 Normandy, France. In April 1945 Marine May hid in the camp along with others when the Germans attempted to move the prisoners on a march to a new location.
