Henry Hewlett, an Iron and Steel Worker from Wigan, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 4 April 1939. He volunteered for commando service after their formation and was attached to No.6 Commando. Private Hewlett was reported missing 26 February 1943, later confirmed prisoner of war, during operations in Tunisia (Battle of Steamroller Farm). He escaped from captivity on 14 April 1945 hiding in a building 5 days before meeting up with American allies on 19 April 1945. Member of the Commando Association.
