Corporal George Evans was reported missing 2 June 1941 during operations in Crete, later confirmed a prisoner of war. George Lancelotte Evans from Claughton, Birkenhead, was employed at Birkenhead Central Library before enlisting on 28 April 1939. During his captivity he passed a Library Association Intermediate Exam for Librarians.
