Recommendation
Lieutenant Scaramanga throughout the operation showed the highest degree of leadership and devotion to duty. On one occasion he asked permission, which was granted, to remain behind to ambush 3 A.F.V.'s which had been engaging his Troop. He set up an ambush and engaged the A.F.V.'s with A/T Rifle to such good effect that the A.F.V.'s advance was stopped.
Later when his position was over-run by the enemy infantry he withdrew only a few yards and secreted himself in a river bed till nightfall when he made his way through the enemy lines and rejoined our forces after a cross country march lasting for 3 days. This march was over the most barren and difficult country and he and his men had no food or water except what could be scraped from local sources [3a].
