George Edward Lewis, an Engineer from Sherwood, Nottingham, enlisted into the Armed Forces 4 September 1939. He later volunteered for commando service and was attached from his Regiment to No.6 Commando. Acting Corporal Lewis was reported missing in North Africa on 26 February 1943 (Battle of Steamroller Farm at El Aroussa, Tunisia), later found to be a prisoner of war.
