Edgar Albert Barnett, a Labourer from Birmingham, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 15 July 1939. He volunteered for commando service and was attached to No.7 Commando which embarked for the Middle East forming 'A' Battalion of Layforce. Lance Bombardier Barnett was reported missing 20 April 1941 during operations in Cyrenaica (Bardia raid), later found to be slightly wounded (flesh wound left arm) and a prisoner of war. He escaped from a camp whilst recovering from Pleurisy in Italy on 8 September 1943 after the Italian Armistice. Recaptured by the Germans 24 September 1943
