Participated with British Expeditionary Force in Norway 1940. Evacuated to UK. Served as batman to Captain Evelyn Waugh*. Transferred Royal Horse Guards circa August 1943 and completed Parachute Training Course circa December 1943 still in role as batman. His family advise he later served at Arnhem.
