John Craig 2 Commando
John Craig was a Police Officer from Blackpool who volunteered for the Commandos enlisting 23 July 1942 as part of the 2nd Police Intake to the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry.
Private John Craig was posted to No.2 Commando on 24 September 1942 and served in 'A' Section, No.2 Sub-Section of 5 Troop. Whilst No.2 Commando were based in Ayr before deployment overseas he was billeted at 61 Mill Street, Ayr. Embarked for Gibraltar 13 April 1943. Reported missing 13 September 1943 whilst with Rfn. A. Davies in a forward section post on Hill 321 at Vietri Sul Mare, Italy, which was overrun by the enemy for a period of 2 hours. Both were later found to be prisoners of war. Escaped with others 15 April 1945 making their way to American lines on 25 April 1945*. Returned to the UK 12 May 1945. Spent a short period in the UK with the 9th Beds. and Herts. Released to Class W (T) Reserve 14 January 1946.
