James Mark Neaves, a Baker from Letchworth, enlisted into the Armed Forces 1 September 1939 and later volunteered for the Commandos. Gunner Neaves, No.7 Commando (Layforce) was reported missing during operations in Crete, later confirmed a prisoner of war since 1 June 1941. During his captivity he was put to work on a surface coal mine. Hospitalised twice during that period for a total of 18 weeks with pneumonia and appendicitis.
