Marine Samuel Northern, RM Commando 10 Platoon, died of wounds during operations at Dieppe, France. He was buried at sea from HMS Locust.  Son of Thomas Bernard and Mary Elizabeth Northern, of Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire.

Notes
  • The CWGC shows his unit as HMS Locust.  This was the name of the ship that carried about 200 Royal Marine Commandos on the raid at Dieppe. The Casualty Log records his unit as 10 Platoon of the RM Commando. The RM Commando was redesignated shortly after the raid as 40RM Commando. The casualty log record also shows died of wounds and buried at sea from HMS Locust.
  • We have an Image of a Signals Intelligence Unit [view] formed for the raid at Dieppe which operated covertly on on this raid as a platoon of the RM Commando. On that image PO/X 101038 Mne Samuel B. 'Ginger' Northern, is named as a member of the unit. The unit was 10 Platoon 'X' Company under the command of Lieutenant H.O. Huntington-Whiteley [more...], their role to acquire signals intelligence documents from German Naval HQ at Dieppe. 
  • His name is recorded on the 40RM Commando memorial plaque at Shanklin Chine, Shanklin, Isle of Wight.
