Alexander Gilmour volunteered for the commandos in 1942 and was posted to the 3rd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry.
On completion of his training he was posted to No.3 Commando. In November 1943 he was a Clerk in HQ Troop (Command Section) and later served in 3 Troop. His service included Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Discharged from military service 29 September 1945 and re-joined the Police. In 1948 he was based at the Police Station in Port Patrick, Wigtownshire. Member of the Commando Association residing in 1978 at Stranraer.
