Raymond Stanley Thompson was a Surrey Police Constable who in 1939 was based at the Police Station in Bridge Road, Godalming. He volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 joining the 3rd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. After completing his training he was posted to 34 Troop, the Army Wing of what eventually became known as 30 Commando Assault Unit. Amongst other designations for this unit was the Special Engineering Unit.
