Raymond Stanley Thompson was a Surrey Police Constable who in 1939 was based at the Police Station in Bridge Road, Godalming. He volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 joining the 3rd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. After completing his training he was posted to 34 Troop, the Army Wing of what eventually became known as 30 Commando Assault Unit. Amongst other designations for this unit was the Special Engineering Unit.

21.12.1942 nominally transferred to 17/21st Lancers.

17.06.1943 30 Commando, embarked at Liverpool for Algiers.

27.06.1943 disembarked theatre of war Algiers.

05.07.1943 - 10.08.1943 admitted 98 General Hospital at Sousse.

17.08.1943 - 31.8.1943 admitted 105 General Hospital.
