Bill Aspey, a Clerk from Prenton, Birkenhead enlisted into the 2nd Battalion Liverpool Scots before volunteering in 1940 for the Independent Companies and joining No.4 Independent Company. He took part in the Norway Campaign (Scissorforce) from May 1940. On their return he took the place of the late Private Martin, as batman to Lieutenant Taylor. In February 1941 he was attached to the new No.2 Commando formed under Lt. Col. Newman. Whilst No.2 Commando were based in Ayr he was a Lance Corporal in 5 Troop, 'A' Section, No.1 Sub-Section and No.1 on the Bren gun. He was billeted at 24 Park Circus, Ayr. He embarked with No.2 Commando for Gibraltar in 1943 and saw active service with them throughout the remainder of the war.
