Charles William Henry Gardiner, a Labourer from Portsmouth, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 13 June 1940 later volunteering for the commandos. Private Gardiner, No.7 Commando attached to Layforce, was reported missing later confirmed prisoner of war 20 April 1941 during an operation at Bardia, Cyrenaica, Libya.
