Sergeant Burchell served in Royal Marines 33 Section, X troop, which in the Spring of 1944 was based at Littlehampton. He later took part in the allied landings at Normandy. Formerly a Police Constable in Bournemouth he volunteered for the commandos in 1942 joining a Police Intake to the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre) at Achnacarry.
Burchell joined the Hampshire Constabulary on 11 March 1938 and given the number 495. In 1939 he was single and a Police Constable residing at 67, Alma Road, Bournemouth. He joined HM Forces on 12 August 1942. Rejoined the Hampshire Constabulary from HM Forces on 14 February 1946 and was stationed in Bournemouth on 31 March 1948 when he transferred to the Bournemouth Police. By 1949/1950 Police Constable Burchell was serving as a driver in the mobile traffic section.

From the the book Attain by Surprise p.136, "There were a few new faces, including first rate Sergeants such as Bob Burchell and Sam Harrison, both policemen in civil life." These men are believed to be identical with Percival Burchell and Ivan Harrison. Service Record required to validate.
