George Harry Birtles enlisted 10 March 1942 and was posted to the Depot RM Lympstone. 28 April 1942 posted 5th RM Battalion. Attended a Snipers Course 15 to 27 March 1943. Served with 45RM Commando from 1 August 1943 until the end of hostilities. Service included in 'B' Troop. Active service included Normandy, France, and the advance to Germany. Final date of discharge from RM service 8 June 1946.
