Clifford Luff joined the Surrey Constabulary on 1 October 1939. After volunteering to join the commandos Police Constable Luff enlisted on 23 July 1942 into the General Service Corps and was taken on strength of the 2nd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. Married Audrey Bacon from Lewes, Sussex, 29 August 1945 at St Annes Church, Lewes. Re-joined Surrey Constabulary 1 March 1946. Promoted Police Sergeant 27 July 1952. Member of the Commando Association from Guildford, Surrey.
