Lt. Colonel Augustus Charles Newman, Officer Commanding No 2 Commando, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry whilst Military Force Commander of Operation Chariot, St. Nazaire. He was a prisoner of war after the raid.

On the 1st July 1939 the then Private John Roderick received his commission as Second Lieutenant.  After volunteering for the Commandos he joined No 2 Commando 3 troop. On the St Nazaire raid he commanded an assault party of commandos embarked on board HMS Campbeltown.

Lieutenant Bryan Samain was appointed Temporary Second Lieutenant Royal Marines on 9 November 1943. Joined 45RM Commando from the Holding Operational Commando later in June 1944 as one of the replacements for casualties after D Day. Appointed as Intelligence Officer July 1944.
