Cemetery/Memorial: 
Trooper William Smith was reported missing August 1942 during operations in Burma, later presumed killed in action on or shortly after 31 August 1942. He was attached to the Special Service Detachment and has no known grave. Son of William Henry and Ada Emily Smith, of Enfield, Middlesex.
Service in Burma
His secondary unit on the Casualty Lists is recorded as 'B' Bn. Layforce which was the designation of No.8 Commando whilst part of Layforce in the Middle East, not Burma.
Some from Layforce joined Middle East Detachment (2) later redesignated Special Service Detachment (SSD) which operated in Burma. He is named on a Forum message about those who served in SSD2. Further details of service are not known by this archive.
