Sidney Bateman, a Covent Garden Wholesale Salesman from London, enlisted 18 December 1939. Volunteered in 1940 for the commandos and attached to No.7 Commando. Embarked with Layforce for operations in the Middle East. Bombardier Bateman was reported missing 2 June 1941 at Crete, later confirmed slightly wounded and a prisoner of war. Post war member of the Commando Association from Bedfordshire.
