Sergeant Samuel Cooper was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service while operating with the Army during the successful landings in Normandy [1][2]
Recommendation
"After the bulk of the Officers and S.N.C.O.'s in his troop had been killed in the initial assault this Sgt took a leading part in directing street fighting operations within his troop. Later on he led a courageous assault onto a strong enemy MG position in the open fields on the SW side of the town." [Recommended by Lt Col. C.R. Hardy, Comd. 46RM Commando] [2].
  • Samuel Cooper was educated at St Lawrence's Roman Catholic School, Newcastle upon Tyne, after which he was an apprentice butcher at the Newcastle Co-operative Butchering Department in Walbeck Road [3][3a].
