Ronald Gittins enlisted into the Armed Forces on 25 October 1938. Lance Sergeant Gittins, No.3 Commando, was reported missing 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe, France, later found to be prisoner of war.
Escaped 21 June 1943, recaptured 23 June 1943. Escaped 13 May 1944, recaptured 16 June 1944. Escaped 3 times on the line march from Lamsdorff finally reaching American lines 19 April 1945.
