Reginald Levitt, a Butcher's apprentice from Whitefield in Bury, enlisted into the Royal Marines 18 December 1940 and volunteered for the commandos on, or just after, 14 February 1942 when the 'RM Commando', later re-designated 40RM Commando, was formed. Marine Levitt was wounded and a prisoner of war 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe. Liberated May 1945.
