Reginald Douglas Kohler from Annis Road, Hackney, East London, enlisted March 1940 for continuous service in the Royal Marines, former civil occupation Shoe Maker.
Marine Kohler, 46RM Commando, was wounded and a prisoner of war 12 June 1944 during operations at Rots, Normandy. Treated after a 10 day delay in hospitals at Le Mans and Alencon before confinement in prisoner of war camps. Two unsuccessful escape attempts the first at Rennes by tunnelling (discovered and moved camp), the second whilst being transported by train (discovered before being able to complete escape). Confined in a cattle wagon for 23 days whilst being moved from Limburg Camp to Marlag Camp in August 1944.
