Trooper Norman Barnes died as a result of a grenade accident at Tabarka, North Africa. Son of George and V. M. Barnes, of Gosport, Hampshire. Norman Barnes was a Police Officer who volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 joining the 2nd Police Intake to the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry.
Extract from the No 1 Commando War Diary 6-8 December 1942
6 Dec.1942 - Unit returned to TABARKA (under troop arrangements) from Operation.
7 Dec.1942 1000 hrs, Church Service held in Market Hall in memory of officers and men killed on Operatio 1400 hrs, Arms and equipment check.
8 Dec.1942 - Unit resting at TABARKA; 1200 hrs, A grenade explodes in Davies troop, killing Tpr Barnes and injuring Pte. Tucker, both of Davies Troop.
Extract from the Hampshire Telegraph - Friday 08 January 1943
"Police Commando Dies of Wounds:-  A smart and promising young member of the Hampshire County Police, Mr. Norman A. G. Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnes, 32, Welch Road, Gosport, has died of wounds. He joined the Army, from Basingstoke Division of the Police last July and, trained as a Commando. Prior to entering the police he was with his father on the staff of Gosport and Portsea Steam Launch Company. He attended Clarence Square Senior School."
