Gunner Maurice Bennett, 3 Troop, received a Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service during his successful escape from captivity on 7 July 1944 having been taken prisoner of war at Amfreville, Normandy, on 27 June 1944 [1][1a][1b].
Bennett had been with No.3 Commando during operations at Dieppe and Agnone and was described by his Commanding Officer Lt Col. Peter Young as a 'tough, stout hearted and resourceful Gunner' [2].
