Mark Leslie Pilkington
Awarded the Military Cross in recognition of gallant and distinguished service between April and November 1941 in Ethiopia whilst a Lieutenant with the Household Cavalry Regiment attached East African Command.
  • July 1942, Captain, 1st Special Service Regiment (Middle East Commando).
  • 1 November 1942 volunteered for the Special Operations Executive.
  • Killed in action whilst with the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), R1 patrol, near W.Tamet. He was on the strength of MO4, Middle East branch of the SOE, attached as Liaison Officer  to the Arab Legion and had organised a month's attachment for himself to the Long Range Desert Group.
  • Son of Hubert Carlisle Pilkington, and of Ruth Honor Pilkington, of Little Offley, Hertfordshire; husband of Susan Violet Pilkington.

His brother 67717 Flying Officer Charles Leslie Pilkington, RAFVR 149 Sqn., also died in the war. He was killed with his crew on 11 March 1942, aged 20, when returning from an operational flight over Germany. Their father died 3 months later on 17 June 1942.
