Kenneth William Ridley Smale joined the Royal Marines on 1 January 1939 and after training was posted to 2RM Battalion. He joined the RM Commando (later redesignated as 40RM Commando) on 8 May 1942. Lieutenant Smale was awarded the Military Cross for bravery, endurance and inspiring devotion to duty whilst serving in Commando operations in the raid on Dieppe, 19 August, 1942, after which he was a prisoner of war in Germany, August 1942—May 1945.
