John Willis-Jones enlisted in the Welch Regiment in May 1939 before volunteering for the Commandos in 1940. He was attached to No.1 Commando as a Signalman and took part in their North African campaign. After promotion he served on the staff at the Commando Basic Training Centre, Achnacarry, as a Sergeant Instructor of Physical Training.
