John Joseph Leonard, a Machine Mechanic, enlisted into the Armed Forces 27 June 1940 later volunteering for the commandos. Corporal Leonard, No.1 Commando, was wounded and a prisoner of war 2 December 1942 during operations at Bizerte, Tunisia [1][2][3].
12.09.1943 escaped from his Italian captors after the Italian Armistice [3].
27.11.1943 recaptured by the Germans and detained until May 1945 [3].
31.01.1946 discharged from service [4].
Address given as Dublin in 1945 after liberation [3]. Followed soon after by Balsall Heath, Birmingham [4].
