Marine John Murray 46RM Commando
John Murray, a Labourer from Cork City, Eire, enlisted into the Royal Marines on 14 April 1942. Marine Murray, 46RM Commando 'B' troop, was wounded by shrapnel and a prisoner of war 11 June 1944 during operations at Rots, Normandy. Initially held for 18 days at Chartres Military Hospital, France, before transportation to Germany. He escaped outside the camp at Marlag for 2 days when the Germans were evacuating prisoners of war on 9 April 1945 and came back in the camp when they were gone.
