1961 Return to Italy

Calling All 2 Commando Brigade
It is with much pleasure that we print extracts from a letter received from ex. Cpl. A. A. H. (Bert) Cowell (2 Cdo Bde) who recently paid a return visit to old commando haunts in ltaly.

"To those chaps who enjoyed the pleasures of the olive field and arches at the camp at Monopoli I can say that the field is still there. Olives are still growing, the flies are just as big, if not bigger, and the ants are still working hard.
Bari is certainly no holiday resort, there being little catering for the tourist, and it has not changed a great deal. A few new buildings have appeared and one good point was that the vino shops and cafes remain open all night. There are plenty of cars and scooters on the roads though unemployment is very high.
Incidentally I stayed at the Albergo Della Luzioni Hotel which many remember as the Officers' Club.
Molfetta where the Bde moved after Termoli is much about the same, and it was nice to see the school used by 3 Commando functioning normally again, Polignano has not changed at all.
The old vino shop, which I am sure Bde HQ chaps will remember, is still there, though Ali is dead. Some of the old inhabitants still remember the Green Beret so our memory still lingers on in Italy.

I had hoped to get over to Vis and some of the other islands well known to 2 Cdo Bde but was informed that they are now prohibited areas. However the holiday proved most enjoyable, and it was great to see all the old places again in peace time. The Vino is still very good !!"
