Private Hugh Callaghan served with 52 Middle East Commando and 'D' Bn., Layforce from 1 November 1940 until 7 June 1941. During that period his commando were deployed to Sudan and Crete. On his return to Egypt after the ill-fated Crete operation he left what was left of the commando on posting to the Royal Corps of Signals and served with them until the end of hostilities. Having initially left the Army in July 1947 he later re-enlisted and remained in service until April 1961. Final rank Sergeant. Miltary Conduct classification: Exemplary.

01.11.1940 posted 52 Middle East Commando.
16.12.1940 left Geneifa, Egypt, by train. Embarked troopship 'President Doumer' for Sudan.
20.12.1940 arrived Port Sudan. Moved to Gedaref (Gallabat-Mettemar sector) for operations against the Italians.
06.03.1941 re-entered Egypt.
24.03.1941 posted 'D' Battalion Layforce.
24.05.1941 embarked Egypt for Crete. Deployed for a rearguard action.
30.05.1941 embarked Crete.
31.05.1941 disembarked Alexandria, Egypt.
07.06.1941 posted Royal Corps of Signals Middle East School and Base Depot.
07.06.1941 struck off strength 'D' Battalion Layforce on posting to Royal Corps of Signals Middle East School and Base Depot.
09.08.1942 transferred Royal Corps of Signals; struck off strength 1st Bn., The Buffs.
11.07.1947 released to Reserve List. Then later re-enlisted and completed 22 years of military service.
