Lieutenant (Acting Captain) Hubert Bray was awarded the Military Cross [1] in May 1940 for gallant and distinguished services whilst commanding the Carrier Platoon of the 2nd Dorsets involved in the defence of Festubert, France [2].
 
Captain Bray was one of the initial selected Officers on 5 July 1940 for the new No. 5 Commando,  the Commando itself being formed on 18 July 1940.  Captain Bray took command of No. 9 troop [3]. An image in our gallery of a banknote is annotated with some names and ranks of 1 troop. The annotation there shows 'Major Bray MC'.[4].

  • 13 November 1958 promoted Lieutenant Colonel, Devon/Dorsets [7].
  • 8 April 1971 retires [8].
The death of " Lt. Colonel H.A.A. 'Oner' Bray MC (5 Cdo) of East Malling, Kent" was announced in Commando Association newsletter 60 issued March 1975.
