Hector Wood was a Nottinghamshire Police Constable residing at Kirkby-in-Ashfield in 1939. He volunteered for commando service in 1942 joining the 2nd Police Intake to the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre) at Achnacarry. Hector served in No.5 Commando and No.12 Commando (which had a Folboat Section) before joining the Special Boat Section. Sergeant Hector Wood, 'A' Group, 2 Special Boat Section, was recommended for an award during an operation in Burma on the night of 17/18 April 1945. He was in command of the second canoe on a patrol of the River Irrawaddy with the objective of intercepting and destroying enemy craft encountered. They engaged a Japanese force of about 100 ferrying a 150mm gun on a raft and succeeded in destroying it and killing many of the enemy before making good their escape. Hector Wood re-joined the Notts. Police in 1945 and was promoted Sergeant in 1952. Married with two sons. Member of the Commando Association. Died after a short illness aged 37.
