Harry Ratcliff, from Oldham Lancashire, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 9 November 1926 and served until 8 November 1938. He re-enlisted on 15 August 1940 later volunteering for the Commandos. He was attached to No.11 Commando and embarked with them for operations in the Middle East as part of Layforce. Corporal Ratcliff was slightly wounded in the stomach during operations at Beda Littoria, Libya, and captured on 24 November 1941. He left Camp 53 on 15 September 1943 after the Italian Armistice but was re-captured by the Germans a few weeks later in October. Liberated in 1945.
