Recommendation
"Arakan 1945
On the 31st January 1945 at Hill 170 near Kangaw Sgt. Notley was Medical Sgt. He moved up to the forward Troop just after first light, and on arrival he set to work, under fire, tending the wounded and organising their evacuation.
With another Sgt he made three attempts to rescue a seriously wounded man who was lying in the open covered by an enemy sniper, only giving up when the wounded man was hit again and killed. On this occasion Sgt. Notley deliberately exposed himself to the sniper's fire in order to carry out his job.
Altogether Sgt. Notley dressed some 20 men all of whom were exposed to incessant fire from the enemy. At 1400 hrs he was wounded in the eye while tending to a casualty. He refused a stretcher which was brought for him and though nearly blind walked back himself to the MDS."
