Lance Sergeant Ernest Edward William Frederick 'Joe' Goldsmith MM was awarded the Military Medal [1] during operations at Termoli having left the Commando, now serving in the Special Raiding Squadron (SRS) [2]
Recommendation
In the fighting South of Termoli on the 3 Oct 43. L/Sgt. Goldsmith led his sub section with great daring and initiative and, when one of his Officers was wounded, tended him himself and evacuated him under heavy fire. In subsequent operations when large numbers of men had been wounded he immediately dashed forward under fire to their assistance and organised stretcher parties to evacuate them. Later when ordered to hold an important section of the line he took up a position on top of 500 gallons of petrol although under heavy fire, as this was the only place from which he could carry out his task. Thorughout he showed a very high standard of leadership and his courage was a constant inspiration to his men. [Recommended by Major R.B.Mayne D.S.O., Commanding Special Raiding Squadron.] [2].

LSgt. Goldsmith MM also served in the 1st Special Air Service. His service timeline is in our No.8 Commando gallery entry [view....].
