Marine Eric Deans from Barrow was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for gallantry, skill, determination and undaunted devotion to duty during the landing of Allied Forces on the coast of Normandy. He was a frogman attached to the Landing Craft Obstruction Clearance Unit (LCOCU) engaged in clearing the under water approaches to the beaches.
