Charles Le Grand 10 (IA) Commando Belgian Troop
Charles Le Grand MM, Belgian Troop
Recommendation British to Foreign: Belgium
This NCO was in charge of the Mortar Section of 'A' Section of the Belgian Troop.
On D Day 1 November 1944 his Section was given the task of clearing part of the North of the town of Westkapelle. LCpl Le Grand was wounded in the back by shrapnel from a mortar bomb. He did not disclose this fact until the task given to his Section was completed and the fighting in the town of Westkapelle had ceased that evening. He was treated by the Medical Officer and returned to duty with his Troop.
On 5 November 1944 the Belgian Troop of No.10 (Inter Allied) Commando was given the task of clearing the enemy from a Sector of the wooded country to the East of the town of Domburg. LCpl Le Grand was put in charge of a Sub-Section of 'A' Section. 'A' Section came under heavy fire from enemy machine guns and were pinned down. The Officer Commanding the Section was killed and the Sergeant badly wounded whilst other casualties were suffered.
LCpl Le Grand rallied his Sub-Section, and on the orders of his Troop Commander personally gave the fire orders to his Sub-Section to cover the attack on the enemy machine gun positions which was put in by 'B' Section on his right flank. During this action LCpl. Le Grand was again wounded by a machine gun bullet in the shoulder. He nevertheless refused to leave his Sub-Section, and subsequently continued in charge of them until the task given to the Belgian Troop had been satisafctorily concluded at 1800 hrs that evening. LCpl. Le Grand was wounded at 1530hrs.
LCpl Le Grand set a very fine example of leadership and courage to the men under his command. Although severely wounded his devotion to his duty was such that he refused to leave his post and continued to lead his men in the final assault.
