15 January 1934 enlisted Coldstream Guards former trade Quarryman; 1937 to Army Reserve List; 1 January 1938 joined Isle of Ely Constabulary; September 1939 mobilised Coldstream Guards; 1940 No.8 Commando; Layforce; 1st Special Service Regiment; September 1941 'L' Detachment SAS; January - April 1942 (Acting Warrant Officer Class 2, Company Sergeant Major) Bouerat, Slonta, and Nofilia raids - awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal; 1943 Regimental Sergeant Major 1st SAS; 13 April 1944 commissioned Second Lieutenant The Queen's Regiment; 26 September 1944 Lieutenant Special Air Service Regiment; November 1945 rejoined the Isle of Ely Constabulary on release to Reserve List; 7 January 1947 left the Police and re-entered military service Gloucestershire Regiment; 21 May 1950 promoted Captain; volunteered for the Malayan Regiment.
