Alfred Goldthorpe from Canada enlisted into the Royal Scots on 13 March 1939. Private Goldthorpe, Royal Scots, was reported missing 26 May 1940 whilst assigned to the British Expeditionary Force in France. After initially being reported as detained this was corrected in 1941 to no longer detained [1][4a].
  • He then volunteered for the Commandos and by December 1942 was serving in No.2 Commando 2 Troop [2][5][Image].
  • 13th September 1943 reported missing during operations with No.2 Commando at Salerno, Italy, later found to be a prisoner of war. He was 2 miles from the allied lines and managed to escape but was quickly recaptured. He escaped a second time near Rome from a box car whilst being transported by train to Germany but was caught by a railway guard [2][3][4].
