Corporal Alexander Verri was awarded the MIlitary Medal for gallant and distinguished service during operations on the Island of Brac in the Adriatic. He was captured during the raid on 3 June 1944 and imprisoned in Germany.
Recommendation
Cpl. Verri, Royal Berks. and No.2 Commando, attached HQ No.2 Special Service Brigade, took part in the night attack on Hill 633, Island of Brac, Adriatic, on Saturday 3 June 1944. He was placed in position on the hill top immediately it was taken and worked his set with great coolness under heavy mortar and machine gun fire.
Later he was sent alone to another position more suitable for signalling. Shortly afterwards the hill was counter attacked by the enemy and lost. Cpl. Verris' wireless set was hit and damaged. The troops in his vicinity withdrew but Cpl. Verri remained attempting to repair his instrumentin the moonlight. Just before dawn the hill was heavily bombarded by our guns, the British Force being there no longer. Cpl. Verri picked up his set and whilst seeking for a more sheltered position bumped into a German post and was captured.
This man's bravery in the early part of the attack helped greatly in the taking of the hill. Later his fortitude in remaining where he had been placed was the sole reason of his capture.
  • In later life Alexander suffered from multiple sclerosis.
  • Member of the Commando Association from Burnham, Buckinghamshire.
