In 1939 Anthony John Godden was employed as a Barman at the Abbey Arms Public House, 31 Harrow Manor Way, Abbey Wood in Greenwich. He enlisted into the Royal Marines on 28 August 1941. Marine Godden, B troop, 46RM Commando, was captured during operations at Rots, Normandy, on 11 June 1944, and transported to Germany.
