William Squires first enlisted into the Welsh Guards on 11 December 1935. He served until discharged at his own request 11 November 1938 after which he joined Kent Police and was posted to Sheerness. He enlisted into the General Service Corps on 23 July 1942 and was taken on strength of the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry, joining the 2nd Police Intake. In September 1942 he was transferred adminstratively to the Welsh Guards and attached to No.9 Commando. He served with No.9 Commando until being posted HQ 1 Special Service Brigade. Struck off strength 1 Special Service Brigade 28 September 1944 on being posted initially to the Training Bn. Welsh Guards before transferring to the R.A.O.C.

06.11.1942 disembarked Gibraltar.
04.02.1943 relinquished appointment Lance Corporal own request.
04.03.1943 embarked Gibraltar for UK.
16.05.1943 struck off strength No.9 Commando on posting to Commando Depot. Taken on strength HQ Special Service Brigade.
15.09.1943 posted No.1 Special Service Brigade from Commando Depot. Appointed Lance Corporal.
30.10.1943 attended a course of Bootmakers Instruction until 14.11.1943.
05.06.1944 HQ 1 Special Service Brigade embarked UK.
06.06.1944 disembarked France.
28.09.1944 posted Training Bn., Welsh Guards.
Released Class W/T Reserve 12 September 1945, final rank Corporal, after which he rejoined Kent Constabulary and by 1948 was a Detective Constable at Sheerness. Promoted uniform Sergeant in 1954 and posted to Folkestone. 1965 appointed Serving Brother in The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. Retired 2 March 1969 having served for many years as an Instructor at No.6 Police Training Centre, Sandgate, Kent. Member of the Commando Association last known residing Folkestone.
