Sergeant Dungate was wounded and reported missing 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe, France, later found to be prisoner of war.
Walter Henry Dungate enlisted into the Armed Forces on 16 November 1931 aged 18. After volunteering for the commandos in WWII he joined No.3 Commando. Participated in the raids at Lofoten and Vaagso. Promoted Sergeant he and Sergeant John Hutchings, also of No.3 Commando, took part in a series of talks to factory workers in the Midlands in an effort to boost production for the war effort.
