Corporal Franklin Koons, 1st US Ranger Bn., United States Army, aged 23 and from Swea City, Iowa, was attached to No.4 Commando for Operation Jubilee at Dieppe, France on 19 August 1942. He was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry and leadership during the operation.
Recommendation
During the action Cpl. Koons displayed conspicuous gallantry and admirable leadership. In charge of a small sniping detachment he continued to carry out his duties with very marked success under heavy fire which eventually caused the almost total destruction of the building from which he and his men were sniping. Cpl. Koons is probably the first Amercan N.C.O. to account for a number of Germans in this war.
