 Colour Sergeant Michael Francis joined the Royal Marines in January 1963 and after basic training he served in both 45 and 43 Commando.  He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his gallantry during operations on the Falkland Islands.

Corporal John Freemantle was attached to HQ 3 Commando Bde. RM at the time of his death. The Brigade had been involved for several years in the campaign in Indonesia and Borneo. GILL, Martin Joseph

Lance Corporal Martin Gill died whilst deployed with his Multiple as part of a patrol in the area of Adensee in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district in Helmand province. The aim of the patrol was to assess the atmospherics, meet and talk with local nationals, and disrupt insurgent activity in the area, in preparation for future operations. The Multiple was an hour into its patrol when it was engaged by small-arms re from a nearby compound. LCpl Gill was hit and fatally wounded, and, despite being administered immediate first aid, tragically died of his wounds.
 

GOATLEY, George John

Marine George John Goatley, RMFVR, drowned during a training exercise with No.4 Special Boat Section.

With deep regret we have to record the death of Mne. John George Goatley*, who was drowned when the canoe of which he was in charge capsized under the bow of a river barge during a waterborne infiltration exercise with the Thames Metropolitan Police on the night of 14th November, 1951. We extend our great sympathies to his relatives in their tragic loss."

Corporal Matthew Goldsworthy received the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the field during the period 1 January to 30 September 2015 [1]. He was serving at the time as one of the Landing Craft Coxswains on board HMS Bulwark which was sent on humanitarian operations off North Africa [2].

GOSTICK, Dale Edward

Marine Dale Gostick died whilst serving as a Viking operator in 3rd Troop, Armoured Support Company, at the Sangin crossing of the Helmand River, southern Helmand province, Afghanistan. His troop were returning to their Forward Operating Base, after providing essential support to 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) Battle Group, when the Viking he was driving struck a suspected mine. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team on site, Marine Gostick was pronounced dead at the scene.

GOURLAY, Basil Ian Spencer

Acting Captain Basil Gourlay was awarded the Military Cross whilst serving with 43RM Commando in WW2. 
 
Post war he served in 45 Commando Royal Marines 1945-1948, Brigade Major 3 Commando Bde Royal Marines 1955-1957; OC 42 Commando Royal Marines 1963-1965, ultimately being appointed Commandant General Royal Marines from 1971-75 after which he retired.

GUTTERIDGE, Tobias

Marine Toby Gutteridge, Special Boat Service, received a Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Afghanistan. 
 
His first tour of Afghanistan was with 40 Commando RM.  He subsequently passed UK Special Forces training. In November 2009 during his second tour of Afghanistan, now with the SBS, he was shot through the neck leaving him paralysed. 
 

HABERFIELD, Kevin Howard

Kevin Haberfield GC was born July 1957 and served as a Royal Marine Commando from January 1980 to January 2012.

On the 2nd January 1945 it was announced in Gazettes that the then Corporal Jack Lovell Halford had been awarded the BEM (Military Division).

HARDY, Campbell Richard

Lieutenant Colonel Campbell Richard Hardy, commanded the 9th RM Bn., until it was redesignated as 46 RM Commando on 1 August 1943. He remained as Commanding Officer 46RM Commando until the end November 1944 when he left to take up the post of  Brigade Commander 3rd Special Service Brigade which was operating in the Far East.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and a Bar to the Distinguished Service Order, during the Normandy campaign, and later a Second Bar to the Distinguished Service Order during operations in Burma [1] [2] [3] [4].

HARRISON, Christopher Lewis

Corporal Christopher Harrison, Bravo Company, died whilst part of a patrol alongside the Afghan National Army in order to help provide security for the local population of Sangin. At approximately 0620 hours local time on 9 May 2010, south of Patrol Base Shuga, Corporal Harrison was fatally wounded in an explosion.
 

HARRISON, Matthew Thomas

Marine Matthew Harrison, Charlie Company, died whilst part of a joint reassurance patrol with the local Afghan National Army, south of Patrol Base Seylab Doo. At 1805 hrs local time, the patrol was engaged with small arms fire. Marine Harrison was mortally wounded in the attack. He was evacuated to Camp Bastion Role Three Hospital where he died of his wounds.
 

HARRISON, Thomas

Acting Lance Corporal Thomas Harrison, Company Intelligence Marine, 40 Commando Royal Marines, received the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service for his exceptional service in providing his Company with first class intelligence that enabled them to make a major contribution to campaign success in Afghanistan during the period 1 October 2012 to 31 March 2013.

HEBDEN, Ralph Michael

Marine Ralph Hebden, a veteran of Afghanistan,  went missing after going for an early-morning run. His body was spotted in the sea by a passer-by 3 weeks later. A subsequent inquest heard how he drowned after falling from a cliff path in poor visibility,  and a verdict of accidental death was recorded.

Marine Anthony Helstrip, Mortar Platoon, died when a mortar bomb exploded in the barrel during a live firing training exercise on Otterburn Ranges, Northumberland. Also killed were Mne. Peter Butchers and Mne. Glenn Miller.

Sergeant Samuel Hewitt died in a canoeing accident during a training exercise.

HODGKINSON, Craig

Marine Craig Hodgkinson, 4 Assault Sqn. RM, died of a heart attack whilst playing in a rugby match between the Royal Navy and Cornwall County. 

A keen rugby player, Craig played throughout his school career, including games for the Scotland Under 18s XV.  He also played for Glasgow Hawks and was a member of the team that toured South Africa in 2003 and were unbeaten in their three matches.

HODGKISS, Richard George

Marine Richard Hodgkiss was awarded the Military Medal for outstanding courage and leadership whilst operating as a leading scout of a patrol that engaged the enemy on 13 February 1951 in a forest south of Tapah, Malaya.

HOLLINGTON, Richard Humphrey

Marine Richard Hollington, Bravo Company, died of wounds from an explosion that occurred on the 12th June 2010 whilst he was conducting a reassurance patrol in Afghanistan for the local nationals in an area to the south of Patrol Base Ezeray. He had been immediately evacuated to Bastion Role 3 Hospital where his condition was listed as critical. On 13 June 2010 he was transferred to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. At 1108hrs BST on 20 June 2010, with his parents and brothers present, Marine Hollington sadly died of his wounds.

Marine James Holloway was found dead on board  the RFA Fort Rosalie which was moored in Dubai.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "We can confirm that Marine James Holloway died aboard RFA Fort Rosalie. The cause of death is still under investigation, however we can confirm it was not as a result of operational activity. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Sergeant Lee Houltram died [1] during operations targetting a Taliban bomb making factory near Gereshk, Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  He received a posthumous Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Afghanistan [2].
 
In July 2008 he received a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in Afghanistan during the period 1st October 2007 to 31st March 2008 [3].

HOWE, Gilbert Rex

Acting Corporal Gilbert Howe was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his gallantry on 21/22 February 1951 whilst attached to 40 Commando RM during operations at Kampong, Upper Perak, Malaya. He had been recommended for the M.M. but was awarded the D.C.M. [1].

Corporal Norman Howe died [1] in the British Military Hospital, Singapore [2+3].
 
He was originally buried at Pasir Penang Cemetery, Singapore.  This cemetery was closed in 1974/5 and the next of kin were given various choices at that time. Cpl. Howe's remains were repatriated to England. His name appears on a Memorial Plaque in the Church of Resurrection in Kuala Kangsar in Malaysia [4].

    HUTTON, Jamie R.J.

    Marine Jamie Hutton died when a land rover overturned on a training exercise at Lulworth firing range, near  Weymouth.
     
    Jamie Hutton joined up at the age of 20 and excelled in training, winning the Charnock Shooting Trophy and earning himself the nickname of "The Colonel". He joined K Company 42 Commando RM in May 2006 and served in Afghanistan before becoming a sniper instructor at the CTCRM.

    Marine Richard Hydes, from Bracebridge Lincoln, died in a live firing training accident outside Dhala camp, Aden, while preparing for the initial Radfan operation.  A newly introduced GPMG went off accidentally whilst the gunner was moving position and hit his number two, Marine Hydes, who was ahead of the gunner locating a new fire position.

    Marine Jason Hylton was attached to 539 Assault Squadron RM, and was killed along with others in an attack on a Multi-National Forces boat patrol on the Shatt Al-Arab waterway.

    They were; Warrant Officer Class 2 Lee Hopkins, Royal Corps of Signals, Staff Sergeant Sharron Elliott of the Intelligence Corps, Corporal Ben Nowak of 45 Commando Royal Marines and Marine Jason Hylton of 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines.

    IRELAND, Luke

    Marine Luke Ireland went missing whilst on leave after going for a run in the Glen Clova area.  Despite an extensive search involving Tayside Police, five Mountain Rescue teams, three rescue dogs, search helicopters and 250 Royal Marines and Army commandos, the rescue attempt, in appalling weather, was unsuccessful. Police later confirmed that a body found in the Angus Glens was that of the missing Royal Marine.

    Colour Sergeant Ian Jackson died during an exercise in the Swiss Alps when he fell during abseiling on the Wyssifrau (White Lady) mountain in the Bernese Oberland. 
    Described as a very experienced mountaineer he was taking part in an annual four week exercise arranged by 3 Commando Brigade Patrol Troop.

    JEFFERY, Reginald

    Lance Corporal Reginald Jeffery died whilst deployed to Aden [1].  He was part of a training party that accidentally strayed across into Yemen and was ambushed. Four of the party were killed, one of these being L/Cpl Reginald Jeffery, who at the time was attached from 45 Commando RM to Headquarters Middle East Command [2].
