Marine Richard Hydes 45 Commando
Marine Richard Hydes, from Bracebridge, Lincoln, died in a live firing training accident outside Dhala camp, Aden, while preparing for the initial Radfan operation.  A newly introduced GPMG went off accidentally whilst the gunner was moving position and hit his number two, Marine Hydes, who was ahead of the gunner locating a new fire position [1][1a][1b]
Obituary in the Globe and Laurel [2]
"It is with deep regret we have to report the death of RM 21817 Marine R. Hydes at Dhala on 18th May 1964. He was ever cheerful and ready for a laugh when the going was hard. Popular with the members of his troop, his presence will be missed.
Richard Hydes joined the Royal Marines in October 1962 and 45 Commando was his first overseas commission. We should like to offer our deepest sympathy to his family in their loss" [2].

Bob Howden adds "Dickie Hydes started training with 788 Squad. The photo was cropped from the first Squad photo when formation was complete and training about to commence.  Dickie joined with a number of lads from Lincolnshire and is still well remembered by them. He finished his training with a later squad before draft to 45 Cdo RM."
