Marine John Alexander Smith from Londonderry, died at Rennes, France.

There will be sincere regret among the wide circle of friends, by whom he was held in high esteem, of the death in German hands from wounds received in Normandy of Royal Marine Commando John Alexander (Jack) Smith, youngest son of Mr. Richard Smith and the late Mrs. Rebecca Smith, 22, Charlotte Street, Londonderry.

Commando Smith, who was twenty-one years of age, was educated at Bishop Street P.E. School. He was a foundation member of St. Augustine's Wolf Cub Pack and later became identified with the Boy Scout movement in the city.

He was a member of the Y.M.C.A. and took a keen interest in most branches of sport, especially football and cycling. He played for the Scouts football XI, and as a cyclist was one of the members of the former Londonderry A.R.P. Mobile Despatch Corps organised by the North of Ireland Motor Club. Before joining the Royal Marines he was employed as a shop assistant by Mr. John McVeigh, J.P., Strand Road. During his three years' service Commando Smith took part in the landings in Sicily and Italy.

His father served in the last war and his two brothers are serving overseas - Gunner Samuel Smith, who is with a Londonderry Anti-Aircraft Regiment, and L.A./C. Thomas Smith, R.A.F., who is in Egypt.
